September 2018 Monthly Newsletter

The September 29th, 2018 meeting of the yoopercoinshooters metal detecting club was called to order at 12:41 pm EST. We started as we do each meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance.

Dan Trenary was first up with the secretary’s report. Sharon Bruner made a motion to accept Dan’s report as read and was seconded by Pete Harvala.

Next item was Rand’s treasurers report. The club finances are in fine shape. Rand mentioned he has a few more members to contact which will take care of the yearly dues for the upcoming year. He said he’d give me the amended members roster. After Dan was done I asked Donna if she’d agree to fill Lynn Richards vacancy and take over the clubs assistant treasurer’s position. Donna agreed to take it without hesitation. Donna previously held the secretary’s position and she also said she would assist Dan in the winter months if needed. (Donna spends the summer months camping with her husband). Donna is a real asset to the club and she does a lot in the background. Donna also does the paperwork with the county when we have our Adopt A Highway outing three times a year. A motion to accept Rand’s report was made by Bonnie Philips and seconded by Sharon Hurkmans.

I also reminded Rand that we’d have to take Lynn’s name off the club bank account and add Donna’s name as assistant treasurer.

I asked a member to take a new picture of the club officers because of the change of positions in club officers.

I informed the members that I’d received an invitation from a Escanaba public library worker, Brianna Ecklid, to possibly set up a showcase with items club members find metal detecting to bring attention to our hobby of metal detecting. I asked Bill Castle to come with me in the near future and meet with Brianna Ecklid and set something up.

I get contacted by many individuals that show an interest in joining our club. Some follow up and join and some don’t. Some are only interested in which is the best metal detector to buy and where is the best place to detect and find money or jewelry. The first thing I tell them about joining our club is you have to live in the U.P. to be in the Yoopercoinshooters metal detecting club.

Now about the best metal detector to buy: I will not specify any certain detector brand. I just tell them to buy a less costly detector in case the hobby doesn’t live up to their expections. I also tell them to go on the You Tube site and enter metal detecting and look at the many different detectors used and come to their own conclusion on the detector to purchase. I also tell them if they are a yooper and join the club, we have a member (Bill Castle) that is a White’s detector dealer and you’ll get a fair deal from him and he will assist you in the operation of your new detector. I also tell people that ask where’s the best place to detect to watch the You Tube videos and see which areas they hunt. The biggest thing I stress is, GET PERMISSION for any place you plan to hunt so you don’t spoil it for everyone in the future. If you want to detect your local park, contact the Recreation director.

I frequently ask the membership if anyone has a spot where the members can hold a club hunt and Dan Trenary mentioned a spot in the Rock area and another in the Watson area. After a membership discussion we decided on the Watson area. The club met at the old Jaeger IGA store in the Watson area on Saturday September 22nd at noon EST. The members present were Bill Bruner, Dan Trenary, Sharon Hurkmans, Michael Hurkmans, and Ray Roberts. We all went to Dan’s sisters homestead location and detected for an hour or so. Several clad coins and zincon lincolns were found and Bill Bruner found a 1925 lincoln cent.

The day before the meeting (Friday the 28th) we did our Adopt A Highway cleanup and members participating were as follows: Bill and Sharon Bruner, Michael and Sharon Hurkmans, Dan Trenary, Bill Castle, Donna and Rand Gillespie. We finished in less than an hour and collected 8 bags of trash. This was our last Adopt A Highway event for this year and we’ll start again next spring.

Next we bee-lined it for coffee and donuts at the Donut Connection in Escanaba. Our waitress Barb took the picture of the gathering.

Next agenda item was my usual two jokes (I can still hear the laughter!)

The five silver coin drawings, free for members only, went as follows: silver Washington quarter, Bill Castle – Mercury dime, Matt Smith – Mercury dime, Pete Harvala – silver Roosevelt dime, Dan Trenary – silver Roosevelt dime, Sharon Hurkmans.

Next is the 50/50 drawing for anyone attending – $1.00 a ticket no limit on tickets. The winner was Sharon Hurkmans

Next was the $20.00 Gas card drawing – Members only – $2.00 for ticket, only one entry per member. The winner was Dan Trenary.

Congratulations to all drawing winners. Bonnie Philips made a motion to adjourn the meeting and seconded by, Sharon Hurkmans. All in favor with a show of hands, meeting adjourned at 1:35 pm, EST.

The next meeting of the yoopercoinshooters metal detecting club will be Saturday October 27th at 12:30 pm EST.
